This painting is the result of my third attempt of this daisy. I have a feeling there will be another version of this as I'm wanting to try a more dramatic approach. This became a study in subtlety and I have dubbed it Pretty Prima Donna because it became a battle of wills in how it finally presented itself. I figure after the third time around it was time to let it be what it wanted to be.
My daughter and I have been watching the
Planet Earth series lately. If you haven't seen it you should. It is a truly amazing and beautiful series and I don't know how anyone can watch it and not want to do everything they can to preserve our planet.

Still life oil painting flowers kirkeeide

This past weekend was spent up at artist Kristin Grevich's cabin in Grand Rapids, MN. We braved the sub zero temps to watch a horse and sleigh show at the fairgrounds. Luckily we were able to park our car by the grounds where it was held - so we were able to jump in and out to take pictures.
We spent the rest of the day in the warmth of the cabin setting up this still life and painting. I think it took almost as long to set up and light our subject as it did to paint it. What a great time. It's always so nice to paint with another artist to bounce ideas back and forth and give each other feedback. Certainly something that I would like to do more often. You learn so much by seeing it from another perspective.

Rueger - Dog Portrait

This is another of the ranch dogs in Wyoming. If I remember right his name is Rueger.
Heading up north this AM with another DP artist - Kristin Grevich. Hopefully get out and paint if it isn't too cold. Otherwise it may be painting indoors.

Sunlight Basin - wyoming landscape painting

This landscape painting is another inspired from my trip to Wyoming. The location is Sunlight Basin about 50 miles NW of Cody. I've been thinking of this place lately - probably because I am planning to meet up with a few friends from that trip at the CM Russell Art Auction in Montana. I'm excited to see these friends again and to experience this part of the art world. More on that later - it's not until March.

Morning Mist - Lake Landscape Paintings

This is a typical northern Minnesota lake scene. Early morning, the mist rising off the lake, a loon calls from the mist as I sit on the dock taking it all in while I drink my coffee. I am so there.
