Delicate Whites

At last is not the title of my painting but my feelings of finally having power restored after being out for two days. It's amazing how much we rely on everything electric. I haven't been able to paint due to lack of light. And unable to post due to no computer. So I am re-posting an earlier entry. This was posted early on, in the beginning stages of this blog. I really love how this turned out. The colors, the thick texture of the paint. I hope you enjoy it too.

Workin' On the Railroad

My Dad is a huge railroad fan and for father's day last year when an old steam locomotive was making a stop nearby, we went to visit. I ended up taking quite a few pictures and was intrigued by this man who was one of the workers. He just seemed to fit the era and his job. This is one of the paintings that resulted. In looking at these I'm thinking I might have to revisit this series and paint some more.

Let The Sun Shine

Here is another in my series of sunflower paintings. I started this with something else in mind and ended up wiping it and started this one. I really had a lot of fun painting this one and am pretty happy with the results. I am undecided about the direction of this flower though. It was originally looking down and I thought I would try this direction.

Before the Rain

Another in this sunflower series. This one was painted right before the rains came. In fact I was finishing it up just as it started to rain.

Sun in the Rain oil painting

After all the rain we have had here in Minnesota the sun is starting to make an appearance. It seemed appropriate to give you sunflowers. I bought this plant and set up out on my deck to paint it. It is a seemingly shy plant, turning its flowers to gaze towards the ground. I love painting these flowers. Using expressive brush strokes and thick paint really seems to be fitting. Maybe it's my inner Van Gogh.

Minnesota Farmscape

I painted this from a photo I took out the car window on a long return trip from Wyoming. If I had been able to stand in an upright position we would have stopped and painted but due to a bad back I had to settle for painting it from a photo. While I prefer the land and lake sof northern Minnesota there is something about southern Minnesota and it's open and lush farmscapes. I like the simplicity of this painting. Just a hint of a barn way off in the distance and the big open sky full of billowy clouds.

Laughing Raven

Another raven, this time laughing. I really love how these two raven paintings turned out. I especially like the brushwork. And they were really fun to paint.
This one has already found a home.

Raven

The Raven. I have this thing for Ravens. They've taken on symbolic meaning for me due to a visit from one while on a trip to Wyoming. The raven has an abundance of myth and lore surrounding it, often contradictory. It is often associated with death but creation and magic are also considered among its symbols. For me it was representive of magic and creation. Without a long story, I had an up close and personal visit from one while at Yellowstone 2 years ago, appropriately at Artists Point. This was at the beginning of a painting trip that gave birth to the artistic path that I am on now. When my daughter told my story to her Native American friend at work she said that it was a spirit that had come to visit me. Being one who watches and listens to the messages that the Universe sends, I believe her. That visit left such an impression on me that it also played into the name of my studio and business - Laughing Raven Studios. So there you go, a little into the mind and workings of this artist.

Budding Beauty

I wish I knew the name of these flowers. I picked up a bouquet at the store and forgot to make note of that. Whatever they are I like them. Even the buds are pretty. These were just on the verge of opening up and looking very dramatic in its lighting.

Calistoga Cottage

This was fun to paint. Very loosely and quick capturing the dappled sunlight on the cottage. This brings back wonderful memories of a really great vacation.
I stayed in this little cottage on a visit to Calistoga, CA in Napa Valley. The Cottage Grove Inn has wonderful private cottages each with a unique theme and beautifully decorated. Very romantic, I highly recommend it if you are going to Napa.

Joyful Lily Greets the Night

This title just seems to fit this one. She just looks like she's happily bathing in the moonlight.
I think I'm done with lilies for a while. Time to move on to new subjects.

Stargazer

This is a larger piece than my usual 6x8's. I've found painting in a larger format doesn't always produce the results I expect. Everything changes. The feel of the brushes, larger movements that involve more of the arm instead of the wrist, forgetting to mix larger amounts of paint and they take longer and don't feel as spontaneous. But, practice, practice practice... it's all part of the process. I've been on somewhat of a mission to capture these white lillies. One more and it will time to give them a rest!

I hope you are gazing at the stars - my stars are obscured by approaching storms.

Past Prime

This pomegranite may have been past it's prime but it still was an interesting subject to paint. I actually think that in its dried state it takes on a more interesting shape. I like the paint strokes of the background in this, it feels very energetic.

The Onion and The Persimmon

I really like this painting. The depth of the background and the persimmon peeking around the onion, the layers and textures of the onion's skin and the colors. It goes perfectly in my house, but of course I have just recently observed that everything I paint goes really well in my house. I would say the color choices of my pallette carry through in all areas of my life.

Safflower

I found these at the grocery store of all places. I really loved its shape and especially the orange pompom flower on top. They reminded me of thistles, minus the irritating part. Turns out they are of the same family.

Waiting

These Thistles became a quick study while waiting for my friend to finish up her plein air piece. Sat my self down in the dirt for a better view and ended up sitting on another - which I don't recommend.

This turned out somewhat light and pastel in color, which somehow doesn't really feel like me, but it's a nice airy little painting. I like the movement in my brushwork and the over all looseness. For being so pretty and delicate looking, these flowers are prickly little plants. Able to protect itself if you were to threaten it. Maybe not so different than many of us.

Lovely Lily

Another in my pursuit of whites. Still not easy but still trying. I went out and bought a bouquet of these. They certainly fill the house with their fragrance.

I attended The Uptown Art Fair in Minneapolis this weekend. I admit it's been about 20 years since the last time because it gets so crowded that you can barely move. Saturday turned out to be overcast and a bit rainy at times which was perfect (for me) and the art was fantastic. I was encouraged by the amount of paintings in the show. The one that stood out for me was the work of A.E.London Her work of wild animals is stunning. These portraits are all filled with emotion and power and really capture the essence of the animal. I love discovering work like this.
