Early Color minnesota plein air painting

The weather gave me a break today and I went out to the yard to put my workshop knowledge to test. I attempted to do this quickly and with a bolder approach in color. It certainly helps that the maples are beginning to turn here in Minnesota. It's a perfect fall day here (for the moment) and is my favorite time of year. I have to admit I miss the mountains of Wyoming and feel the urge to start a fire in the wood stove of the cabin. The fireplace will have to do.

Aspen Grove

Another from Cody. This beautiful little creek wound its way back and forth through the grove of aspens. Very peaceful and serene when I wasn't constantly looking over my shoulder for bear and moose. I think this little study will eventually re emerge as a larger painting.

Fall Aspen

I'm back from a painting trip in Wyoming. Nine days in the mountains made it hard to come home and back to the city. The aspens were turning and reached their peak while we were there. Brilliant spots of gold against the dark pines on the mountains. Absolutely beautiful.

7D Pasture

I am leaving for nine days of painting near Cody, Wyoming. This painting is of the pasture at the ranch that I will be staying. I hear it's cool weather, the trees are starting to turn, the elk are coming down from higher elevations and the bears are active - YIKES!! I may or may not have internet access while there so I will try to post the days work. If not, then I will have lots to post when I come home.

Chinese Lantern

A little preview of fall. Chinese lanterns have intrigued me since I was a child. I remember a neighbor who had large gardens around her yard and this is where I saw my first lanterns. I used to imagine them being used by fairies as real lanterns. I wonder if they do.

I look at this and keep hearing the line from a song....."and it goes round in circles....." I guess because the petals are so layered they look like they are swirling in circles.

I was driving by the lake the other day and saw one of these eagles soariing overhead. I don't see them often, I think of them habitating the river bluffs. It was fun too see one so close.

At Last

The title of this has two meanings. This is early in the morning just as the the sun is "at last" hitting the tops of the mountains.
The location is near Cody, Wyoming at a ranch that I visited for a painting workshop two years ago. "At Last" because in two weeks I will be returning there for another week full of plein air painting. I did this as a warm up to get in the mood and I am very excited about meeting up with some friends from the previous workshop and meeting new - all of us artists painting the great outdoors. Awesome.
