Morning Shadows - Minnesota landscape

Mornings and evenings are the best for light. Of course this is not a new revelation but I do love those times of day when the shadows are long and things are quiet. I loved how in the morning light this tree cast a giant shadow that extended all the way down the hill.

Morning Light at Lone Lake - tree landscape painting

I love trees. I always have. They bring a sense of comfort and home to me and I know that whenever I am in a landscape without them it seems lonely. This is actually another from that early morning at Lone Lake when the sun was coming up over the hill.

Crow Medicine

Raven Study
6x8 oil on canvas
$130 + $12 s/h

One thing I love about this online format is how I get to connect and meet such wonderful people. I had an inquiry about one of my Raven paintings - one that I have in my own collection and had decided to keep. Through our emails she told me how a crow had come to symbolize her recovery from cancer and she couldn't get my painting out of her mind. I understood how we can connect to a symbol or totem that represents an important part of our life, since the Raven has a lot of meaning to me. We shared our stories, made book recommendations and I painted her a painting. I'm sure if we lived closer we would probably have met for coffee or something. Sharing my art online has opened many doors, most of all meeting people who I otherwise might not have met. To hear how my paintings somehow touch others is amazing. I love that.

The first painting is a small study of a raven that I met up with in Yellowstone. This one I call Crow Medicine, as it helped her find the strength to recover from her cancer.

Looks Like Italy - A Utah landscape

This was painted in Utah but these trees remind me of the cypress trees in Italy so I'm going to pretend. Someday I'll paint the real thing.

Evening Birch - Plein Air landscape painting

This is another tree in my backyard....well, in my neighbors backyard. I'm trying to more work from life so I painted in the backyard tonight. I was dealing with the light changing faster than I could mix my paint and then got sidetracked with a slight problem in the house. By the time I got back out there the sun had gone behind the distant trees and took the dappled light with it. So I had to finish it from memory.

Kelly - pet portrait

This is Kelly. Her owner is a volunteer of the English Springer Spaniel rescue league. Her special "cause" is fostering and adopting dogs aged ten and older. She adopted Kelly when she was twelve and had had a stroke. She only expected to have her for six months but ended up having her for 4 1/2 years. I think it is very honorable to take in an older dog, especially one with health issues. She told me it is surprising how many older dogs end up in foster care due to their family dying or going into assisted living. She says there has also been an influx of dogs due to the mortgage crisis.

So if you have it in your heart to adopt a dog, think of one like Kelly.

Good Morning Tree

This was the view, one morning, as I came up the hill from checking out a park nearby. The sun was back lighting the tree and it was so spectacular. This isn't quite like being there, but trust me, it was beautiful!
I tried a new painting panel with this one I haven't quite warmed up to it. It certainly called for a different technique in painting and it took me a while to find a brush that wouldn't lift the paint back up off the surface. I do like the end result though.

Raven Song Study oil painting

Our 95 degree friday brought on a monster line of storms that ushered in an absolutely perfect weather weekend. Sunny with cool breezes. My kind of weather. This prompted me to paint in my "summer studio". My screened in porch is perfect. It gives me more light, keeps me shaded and it lets me be outdoors to paint.

This Raven painting is a bit of a departure from my usual style but I am really liking it and want to try more. I came up with some ideas for a series of paintings while playing in Photoshop and to get the effect I wanted I knew I would have to try a different approach than my usual style of painting. I ended up trying a pallette knife with this one and I really had a lot of fun with it. I do have another approach in mind to try so I will keep you posted.
Hope your weekend was glorious!

House Painting - Real or Otherwise

This house is the mate to the previous house painting I was commissioned to paint. This one was hard. I think because it had so much trim on it. But then I'm overly critical at times...:) I've found I don't enjoy painting straight lines and edges as much as I enjoy the natural lines and curves of nature. This same reasoning also translates over to the physical painting of a real house - I don't enjoy that as much either. Too much trim.

Grandfather Tree Before the Storms - plein air painting

My daughter and I each have our name for this tree in my backyard. I've always called it the Grandfather Tree and Katie calls it the Great Tree. Tonight the sun through the leaves made it seem to glow so I decided to try and capture it. I quickly grabbed all my painting stuff and went at it. This was down and dirty as the sky grew darker and darker with an approaching storm. Luckily I got it in before it hit. Another race with the light.

It's All About Lily

I'm sad the weekend has come to an end. I finally started exploring some ideas for sometime now and want to keep going. This is not one of them but I will post at another time. I painted a lot - some things worked some didn't but that's ok. I had some techniques I wanted to try and I think I hit on something I really want to explore some more.
This one isn't exactly what I envisioned as the end result and it may or may not evolve into something different. Once all that paint dries I'd like to try some glazing on it. Or not. We'll see!

Lone Lake Plein Air

This is the second of the day from my outing to Lone Lake, the water lily capital of the world. Okay, I made that up.
Painting in the summer here, in the land of green makes one very tired of green. Or of at least painting it. It's beautiful, but I'm ready for some color.
Have a great 4th of July.

A day with the water lilies

I spent the day painting at this great little lake nearby called Lone Lake. The lake is covered with water lilies. I wish I would have had a boat to get up close and personal. I did the next best thing and stood on the dock. I even managed to not lose anything in the water. Another painter was not so lucky, but I did fish her brush and even her painting out of the water. That's about the extent of my fishing interests.
This is my lily study. It turned out very impressionistic. More like a sketch in oils.
