Two for the Storm, Floral Daily Painting

Pretty In Pink 6x8 oil on canvas panel $100 + $12 s/h

Flowers for a Rainy Day 6x8 oil on canvas panel $100 + $12 s/h

We have a winter storm warning coming (so they say) and I posted these two today as a reminder of warmer days. I also posted these to reintroduce them. They were some of my early postings when I think I might have been the only reader. Thank you all who are visiting for the first time and to all of you who keep coming back. I am so happy when you do.

"Field Of Gold", Landscape Daily Painting

This is from and earlier plein air study I did this fall. I really like how this one turned out. Simple, clean almost abstract.
I think this would be a nice little surprise from Santa, don't you think???

Permission To Fail

I had every intention of posting yesterday. I essentially painted two paintings, or I should say the same painting twice. I wiped it twice. Leaving me with nothing to show for my efforts except frustration, and in true dramatic and tortured artist form, doubting my pursuit of being an artist.

I sometimes wonder what happens in those moments when a painting just refuses to be painted. Looking back at my subject matter I realized it just wasn't my normal choice of perspective or composition and I wonder too if that was a factor. I suppose there are many factors that could come into play that would help justify my failure to produce a painting I was happy with.

This morning, by chance, I read a timely excerpt from the book "What We Ache For" by Oriah Mountain Dreamer In essence, we do the work. Every day. As much as possible. We learn by doing and that often times means failing. We have to be willing to fail and accept that we will fail. We need to keep at it, keep doing the work and the brilliance will emerge. If we quit, we will never find that brilliance. It's easy to give up in our frustration but as artists we know we thrive on coming to the canvas picking up the brush and we can't stay away.

So this morning after reading, taking a walk to connect to my inspiration, choosing another subject and giving myself permission to fail, I painted. And it went much more smoothly.

"First Impression" Sonoma Valley landscape

This painting is of my first impression of wine country in Sonoma Valley in California. We had been driving for quite a while and came upon this beautiful view overlooking my first glimpse of a vineyard. I remember being so excited and wondering if maybe this is what the vineyards in Italy looked like. That was years ago and I still don't have that answer, but someday, then I will have paintings of vineyards in Italy to show you.

"Raven Steals the Sun"

According to a Haida in the beginning the world was in total darkness.

The Raven, who had existed from the beginning of time, was tired of groping about and bumping into things in the dark.

Eventually the Raven came upon the home of an old man who lived alone with his daughter. Through his slyness, the Raven learned that the old man had a great treasure. This was all the light in the universe, contained in a tiny box concealed within many boxes.

At once the Raven vowed to steal the light.

Somehow this painting just evolved into this story even though it didn't start out that way. It is a story that I will most likely explore more through painting in the future.

You can find the rest of the story here

Minnehaha Creek in Early Fall daily painting

This is another version of the creek in early fall with the colors starting to change. I really like this spot on the bridge overlooking the creek. Might have to continue the series into the winter at some point.

Persimmon Pair Daily Painting Still Life

I found these at the grocery store and bought them more for their subject value than the nutritional. We did however try one after I painted their portrait. It was good but somewhat bland. I don't know if that's the norm. Their looks are not bland though, I like the colors in this one, the orange of the fruit, the greens in the leaves and the teals in the cloth they sit upon. Yummy!
