Peonies on the Porch
9x9 oil
This painting started life as an 11 x 14 but the composition went astray so I've cut it down into this version. Funny how I don't often see the problems until it gets up on the screen. The phrase "step away from the easel" keeps running in my mind. I sometimes forget that in the process.

I bought these peonies at the Farmer's Market and set them up in my "summer studio" (my screen porch) to paint. I love being able to paint out there. Just like being outdoors with the sights and sounds but with an overhead fan and a roof. Kind of a faux plein aire situation.

Peonies are one of my absolute favorites, Deb...and this painting is simply gorgeous! How many ways can I say it? Your work is fabulous! ~Janine XO
Hi Deb, I love Peonies too! Ours always bloom around my birthday. This is a wonderful and colorful painting.
Again it's nice to see your brushstrokes appearing on your blog. A positive sign I think!
Leave for Rochester Tomorrow!

oh, there are few things more beautiful in all ways than peonies! and yours are fantastic! just gorgeous -
and a little funny aside: the word verification here is "pansies" - well, all in keeping with the fabulous floral motif!!! ;)
Peonies are the best aren't they? They are my favorites too Janine!
So they bloom around your birthday Doug? Happy Birthday whenever it occurs.
That's pretty funny about the WV Gypsy! Maybe it's a message I should paint some pansies next!
Thanks everyone.
Thank you for visiting my blog and your kind words. I love Peopnies, I just bought a pot and planted last week so I'd have my own fresh cuts to paint, your paintings is wonderful!
Oh, how cool!! We both LOVE peonies!!! Just stopping by again to see what's up! Sending you all my best wishes for an amazingly productive week! ~Janine XO
Very beautiful. I also am a huge peony fan - this was a big year in my part of Mass. for peonies. Everyone I know had beautiful flowers.
I totally get your "step away" from the canvas comment. It is amazing what you don't see when you're immersed and what you do see when you step away and come back.
Have a fabulous 4th of July, Deb!! Love, Janine
Beautiful colors and I love the texture.
Found you by way of Janine at Sniffles and Smiles. Love to find other artists to admire. Your work is fabulous and inspiring. Will definitely be back to drool...

Deb, stepping away from the easel must be like re-reading your own prose the next day. You get a fresh perspective on it that just isn't available when you're in the thick of creating.
I love peonies because they survive almost anything - heat, lack of water, my neglect etc. This reminds me that they should be something to go in my mini-garden for next summer when I'm back here.
Sorry I've been absent for a while - just hard to keep up with everyone when I'm in such a distractable situation!
