Redheads

I am finally able to post. I painted this a little larger (okay, more than a little) than my normal 6x8s. Although it isn't terribly large - 12x16 I really find it a challenge to paint larger. The brush strokes and movements just aren't the same. And they take me longer to paint. I've been wrestling with these things lately. Not sure what's going on. But I have reached a point where I want to paint beyond instinctively, which I have been doing for a couple years, and applying more thought and technique. I could use a class alone on just how to mix paint on my pallette. My present way doesn't seem too efficient. In time all that will become intuitive as well but for now it begins to seem more mechanical when I have to think so much. But it will come.

White Geranium

This one fought back. All that white, all that green, it just wasn't groovin' for me. So I let it be what it wanted to be. We all have those days, right? Although after I step back from it and look at it from a different perspective it's still a nice little painting. So maybe the one not cooperating was me.

Beautiful Dreamer

I love doing these florals. Somehow my brushwork frees up and has fun. Was somewhat at a loss in naming this but the name Beautiful Dreamer came to mind. So it is. Not always sure where these names come from. It seems we need to be poets with the pen as well as with the paint.

I'd Rather Be Playing Softball

Or in my case I would rather be painting than working on my website. (I am having website issues) Or rather than heading off to work on this fine day. Right now would be a good time to get out and do a little plein air - the light is perfect. Ahhh, well... someday I will be getting up everyday and my work will be to paint.
This guy was kind enough to sit for a session in a workshop with Carolyn Anderson that I attended. He did a fine job and had never modeled before...and said he probably wouldn't again - he'd rather be out playing softball. Can't say that I'd blame him, I'm not sure I would be able to sit for very long either. This figurative is a little different from my usual florals and landscapes but defintely a subject in which I want to push myself and grow in confidence and technique. They've always been a challenge for me - I'm sure it's more of a mental block than a skill block, but I guess it is all tied in together.
Off to play in the digital world and painting with pixels instead of oils.

Japanese Maple

I love these trees. The brilliant color and delicate shape of the leaves. This one lives in Utah with my daughter. Another one of my little studies done en plein air.

Standing Guard

This is one of my plein air pieces from out in Utah. These trees just seemed to be at attention standing guard looking out over the valley. They also reminded me of a scene I might see in Italy. Not sure why exactly, they aren't the same trees but their overall shape is the same.
On an artistic note of another kind, I attended a Vaudeville show last night at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul.
It was a wonderful show and I say that not just because my Dad was part of the entertainment but it was a showcase of incredible talent that many would not be exposed to otherwise. It's always uplifting to see all the talents and gifts so many have to offer. If you ever get to see one, do so, you might discover something new and wonderful.
