Raven Song Study oil painting

Our 95 degree friday brought on a monster line of storms that ushered in an absolutely perfect weather weekend. Sunny with cool breezes. My kind of weather. This prompted me to paint in my "summer studio". My screened in porch is perfect. It gives me more light, keeps me shaded and it lets me be outdoors to paint.

This Raven painting is a bit of a departure from my usual style but I am really liking it and want to try more. I came up with some ideas for a series of paintings while playing in Photoshop and to get the effect I wanted I knew I would have to try a different approach than my usual style of painting. I ended up trying a pallette knife with this one and I really had a lot of fun with it. I do have another approach in mind to try so I will keep you posted.
Hope your weekend was glorious!

Deb,

I love this painting! Not because I live in Baltimore (Go Ravens!) but because it's visually good fun. The trees and quarter moon give it an illustrative feeling, and the complementary colors of bird and background work in concert. I can almost hear his voice:

"But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'"

E.A.Poe

Nice one Deb. I like the stylized trees against the more realistic raven. The raven looks properly scruffy and I love that wide-open mouth. Those complementary colors really sing.
