Waiting

These Thistles became a quick study while waiting for my friend to finish up her plein air piece. Sat my self down in the dirt for a better view and ended up sitting on another - which I don't recommend.

This turned out somewhat light and pastel in color, which somehow doesn't really feel like me, but it's a nice airy little painting. I like the movement in my brushwork and the over all looseness. For being so pretty and delicate looking, these flowers are prickly little plants. Able to protect itself if you were to threaten it. Maybe not so different than many of us.

Ouch! and double ouch!! I have a little legend for you: apparently, when the vikings were trying to overtake a Scottish castle, one of these ferocious fighters stepped on a thistle and screamed so much in pain that he inadvertently forewarned the castle guards and the Vikings ended up defeated... Wonder if this why the thistle is the official flower of Scotland?!

Nice painting too :)

this painting is lovely. i like the pastel quality of it. the image is quite soothing, a nice counterpoint to the plant's prickly nature!
and i like how thistles provide nourishment for goldfinches, one of my favorite summer birds...

Sue, as much as I don't feel like a pastel-y person, the more I look at this one the more I like it.
