Winter Shadows - by Deb Kirkeeide
Winter shadows of the Great Tree. This tree lives in my backyard. I love the shadows it makes especially on the winter snow.

Holiday Glow by Deb Kirkeeide
My daughters keep commenting that I haven't posted in quite a while. What can I say? It's been bust, but I'm getting back into the swing of things. After not painting for a while I admit the rhythm isn't exactly back yet but it's getting there!
This is my neighbor's tree all decked out for the holidays, It's such a welcome sight at night when I come I come home from work. Especially pretty all aglow in the snow.

Spring Blooms - by Deb Kirkeeide
This is an older piece that I have never posted. The weather here has plunged into the deep freeze so a little glimpse of spring seems appropriate.
The temps have fallen over 30 degrees over the course of the day. The rain turned to ice and snow mid afternoon and the wet streets have turned icy. Oh boy! It is supposed to plunge below zero tonight. Hmmm...really looking forward to heading out to work tomorrow. Fun fun!

Evergreen - by Deb Kirkeeide
I woke up late this morning - about the time I'm usually getting around to eating my breakfast before I head out to work. When I hurried into my studio to grab something, I looked out the back windows and there were two deer at the back of my yard. An 8 point buck and a doe. Of course I had to sit down and watch them - what is five - ten minutes more? I love that I have so much wildlife nearby - and I'm only 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis. I also heard coyotes yipping at some sirens the other night. Pretty cool.

Let It Snow - by Deb Kirkeeide
I absolutely love it when it snows. Especially early morning when I have nowhere to go.
I love the quiet gentleness that blankets the land. It is so peaceful. This weekend we had snow each morning and I could just sit with my coffee and enjoy it.
Today it snowed as well - about four inches and rush hour happened to fall right into the middle of it. That isn't quite as peaceful. I don't mind driving in it but I do mind everyone else driving in it!
I couldn't resist a snowy painting tonight.

Promise - by Deb Kirkeeide
This is the latest in my series of women. What struck me most in this young woman's expression was one of strength and promise that she carries with her to her future.

She Runs Free - by Deb Kirkeeide
For me there really is a sense of freedom when I watch a horse run. When I was young I loved horses. I drew them. I read about them. I had a vast collection of horse figurines. I even dreamed that Santa brought me that pony I so wished for when I was 4-5. And I was so disappointed that it wasn't standing in our backyard that Christmas morning. To me there was nothing more beautiful. I still think they are beautiful and magnificent animals.
I'm not sure how this one evolved to what it is. Symbolically the horse represents that free and wild spirit within. The moon represents the feminine nature, the stars represent truth, the tree is our life force and the night corresponds to the preferred time to explore hidden aspects of self - as in our dreams. And thus the title of this painting - She Runs Free Beneath The Night Sky.

Bah Bah Black Sheep - by Deb Kirkeeide
I'm not sure I've ever seen a brown sheep before - which makes me wonder if this is really what they call a black sheep?
I have put in a lot of hours painting in the last couple days and this is really all I have to show for it. Which is really a bummer because I had one that I was really loving bit some how it got away from me and I lost it and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find it again! Just one (or two) of those days I guess.

I think of a Greek Goddess when I look at this one. Very beautiful and alluring. With an infinite wisdom and a presence of pure confidence within. I'm not sure which goddess she would represent - maybe all.

Backwards Glance - by Deb Kirkeeide
I'm really having fun painting this series of women. I know the direction I want to take this in and I think it is finally the start of that process.
I might have to try a snow queen - winter seems to have descended on us here in MN. The snow last friday didn't last long but it has sure remained cold. Tonight is supposed to be our coldest in 8 months. I'm not sure I'm ready for this.

French Twist - by Deb Kirkeeide
I really, really love this one and am pretty pleased with it. I've lately become aware of something in the pattern of ups and downs in my painting. I'm finding that the subjects I choose to "second guess" what may be appealing for sales just don't work well for me. It's when I set that aside and paint what speaks to me that the paintings flow effortlessly. I beginning to believe that those seeming failures are pushing me to be true to my heart. I suppose that's really kind of a no brainer, huh?
So here she is, another fall goddess.
On another note, no matter what your political leanings are, the outcome of this election was a huge statement in our society's history. I knew the significance of it quite some time ago but as I watched the reaction to Obama's win it really hit me. It actually gave me hope.

Autumn Goddess - Painting by Deb Kirkeeide
One of the things I've decided to work on now and for the future is figurative painting. For some reason I have this block when it comes to painting people. I have an idea for a future series of paintings and they involve painting women. So, it's time to step out of the comfort zone and face my fears! I really enjoyed doing this one, staying loose and I really like it. I've named her Autumn in honor of the season. with all these warm fall colors all she needs are some leaves in her hair.

Empty Nest - Painting by Deb Kirkeeide
My life has been hectic lately but it has calmed down and it feels good to be painting again. This one speaks of my present situation. The Empty Nest.
After a year of having my daughter and her dog living with me, she's moved to Florida to join her husband who is now stationed in Pensacola. After a year apart, due to his joining the Marines, he is starting his flight training and she can finally join him. It was strange to come home to an empty house again, harder than I thought it would be. I even toyed (briefly) with the idea of getting a dog to keep me company but then I came to my senses! Besides, I don't think any dog could take the place of Maverick. It's been wonderful having them here and I'm a bit sad that they are gone. I don't know what the usual allotment of the empty nest is, but this is now my fourth and I only have two kids...how does that work?

Never More - October Raven
This little Raven painting was fun to paint. I used a knife this time. I'm liking the textural quality it gives the painting. Very visceral and somehow fitting for the season. Plus it's a painting exercise that pushes me out of my comfort zone.

The 941
Well, I did manage to get this one painted (and my kitchen as well!) and started a larger one as well. And I have been working on my business plan which also takes a lot of time. I think I need a personal assistant to take care of some of this stuff. Still more busy-ness for the next 2 weeks but I will really try to paint - I miss it!

The Great Little White Pumpkin
I seem to have hit an artist's block. Actually I've felt like I've been hitting my head up against that block for the past month. ( no wonder my head hurts!) Even the simplest of subjects seems to be challenging. It happens, and if the words of wisdom are right - I'm on to a breakthrough in my art. I suspect part of it is the multitude of things occupying my mind at the moment, no wonder the muse isn't showing up without a struggle! So, I'm not going to worry about getting that painting out every day and I'm going to get the other things done, like planning for house guests, spending the next couple weeks with my daughter before she moves to Florida again, do some business planning...and I'll still paint. It really makes it so much easier once I decide to allow myself to do the other stuff. A lot better than wallowing in my artist "angst" - which really is a waste of time. I wonder what other artists do when it just ain't workin'? Let me know.
This is one of those little white pumpkins from a previous painting. You need a small exacto blade to carve these little guys!

The Tetons are amazing mountains. I'm not sure if they always appear blue but they were an incredible blue when I saw them. Someday I hope to get out there again to paint. My first and last trip out there was a couple summers ago. if you ever get a chance to go ...go for it!

Chinese Lanterns
Today's painting is sponsored by the color orange. Daily Painters picked today as theme day and it is orange.
When I was a kid we had a neighbor who had gardens with flowers and plants I had never seen before. Chinese Lanterns and Money plants were my favorites. I still think they are pretty cool. And mom said money didn't grow on trees...although Washington seems to think so.
And on the subject of listening to Mom - I somehow lodged a piece of shrimp in my throat last night and had to go to urgent care where the doctor literally scared it out of me - as he was talking going to the ER for removal it magically dislodged itself. So lesson learned? Always chew your food ... and stay away from shrimp!

Two Crows for Joy
A Gathering of Crows
One crow for sorrow,
Two crows for joy,
Three crows for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five crows for silver,
Six crows for gold,
Seven crows for a secret never to be told.
When I was in Grand Marais there was a group of crows that were always around the cabin. I watched them over the time I was there and determined they were a family. The juveniles were adult size but one of the parents would still pick up food or what looked like a small rock and feed one of the others.

Ghost Tree
This was at the Pidgeon River looking down the canyon away from the falls. Across the canyon is Canada.
I liked how the sun was lighting up the rocks on this bluff. And on top is the ghost of a pine tree. Some of the pines have died and turned grey. I think they look like ghost trees.

Lost Horizon
I've been out of commission the last couple days with a back issue. I suspect it's the delayed result of all the painting, climbing and carrying my gear. I knew I should have gone to the chiropractor last week!
This was one of those mornings where the sky and the water were the same color - thus, the lost horizon. the morning I was painting this, a woman stopped by and remarked that there wasn't much to paint and when a boy ran down on the rocks she told me to just "pop" him in there. She was from New Zealand. She and her husband had been traveling through Canada and Alaska, seen the Canadian Rockies and the glaciers in the waters of Alaska - sounded wonderful.

Funny thing about boats anchored out in the harbor - they tend to drift. I finally figured out a pattern to this one's drifting back and forth and would paint everything else until it swung back around into its original position and then quickly paint the boat before it swung back.
